The Connection  Showcases Jeff Levine, 'Owner Lives Childhood Dream of Becoming A Dry Cleaner'

Edison Ross of The Connection recently featured Jeff Levine, owner of the ZIPS in Alexandria, VA, in an article.

Levine grew up around the dry cleaning business. His grandfather was a tailor who came to America from Europe after World War II. He eventually opened a dry cleaner. Levine invited him to career day at his school, and told him that he wanted to be in the business too.

Levine got his start dry cleaning working for his aunt and uncle at the Alexandria location. They had an agreement that Levine would work for them for two years, then buy the location. They now have ZIPS locations in Annapolis and Philadelphia.

American Drycleaner  Reports ZIPS Collects Record 5,000 Outfits for Unemployed

ZIPS Dry Cleaners, a 24-store chain based in the Baltimore/Washington area, recently collected a record number of garments to help consumers affected by the economic downturn.

In addition to offering free cleaning to the unemployed before job interviews, the company held its Will2Work Clothing Drive in June, collecting more than 5,000 suits and other garments to provide disadvantaged adults with professional attire to wear on the job or to interviews free of charge.

News & Messenger  in VA Showcases ZIPS Dry Cleaners in Dumfries, VA

In the March 11th issue, Reporter Benni Scranton, Jr., interviewed Jim Ogan, owner of the ZIPS in Dumfries, VA.

"Customers who use the stores are very loyal. They like our service and our prices. Garments dropped off before 9 a.m. will be ready at 5 p.m. the very same day at no extra cost. Our pricing is very simple," he said.

I
n addition to opening 17 new jobs in the community, Ogan is also showing he is community-minded and is offering free dry cleaning, up to three garments a week, for those who are unemployed and going on job interviews.
 

"With the economy and job market the way it is, I want to help anyone unemployed any way that I can," he said.

ZIPS Partners With Southwest Airlines for Local Coat Drive

Local Southwest Airline employees recently collected more than 500 men's, women's and children's coats and distributed them to three local charities. The Light House shelter in Annapolis was the recipient of more than 130 coats.The ZIPS Dry Cleaners in Annapolis, Columbia, Lanham, Laurel and Timonium donated the dry cleaning of all the coats.

"Our goal was 300 coats," explained Carol Henderson of Annapolis, a Southwest flight attendant. You can imagine how pleased we were to collect 502 coats and help that many people. And plans are already under way for an even bigger coat drive in the fall."

Large Turnout for VA Medical Center’s 16th Annual Homeless Event

On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the VA Medical Center, Washington, DC held a major event providing services to area homeless Veterans. The Winterhaven Homeless Veterans Stand Down offered medical screenings, mental health consultations, employment support and housing services to 411 Veteran participants – a 25% increase over the previous year.

Veterans attending received hot meals, warm clothing, comfort kits, haircuts, and tokens for goods at local thrift stores.

Free Dry Cleaning for Unemployed at ZIPS in Columbia, MD

As featured on ABC2 News in Baltimore, the ZIPS in Columbia, MD wants to help the unemployed by cleaning their clothes for free.

Carlos Cadenas opened the ZIPS in Columbia on December 28th, and he is already showing he truly cares about his customers. In fact, if you can provide him with information that proves you are unemployed, he will clean up to 3 items per week for you until you find a job.

He plans to keep this up until the economy gets bett
er.

ZIPS Dry Cleaners in College Park Donates Clothing for Children's Miracle Network Fundraiser

Armed with $5 bills, the shoppers lined up waiting for the doors to open. Sounds like some kind of bizarre sale? This was no sale, it was the scene of the opening of the temporary thrift store at Marriott's University of Maryland University College Inn and Conference Center. Local community members in need were invited to stuff as many clothes as they could into shopping bags for $5 a bag.
